Obituary of Milton M. Kaplan
Our dad, Milton M Kaplan passed away on April 1, 2013 at age 93. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Sylvia, with whom he had a love affair for 51 years; his baby brother and best friend Lawrence Kaplan, who passed away a year ago; and their sister Adele Jacobson, who shared his love of volunteering and defending the underdog. He is also predeceased by his parents Abraham and Miriam Kaplan.
Milton is survived by his children, daughter Lee Kaplan and son Sam Kaplan (Penny Kaplan), and grandchildren Eric and Kate Kaplan.
Dad was a voracious reader, mainly non-fiction, particularly the Civil War. He also loved a good detective series to cleanse the palate.
As a psychiatric social worker and tireless volunteer, Milton devoted his professional life and retirement years to the developmentally disabled. He served for decades on the Board of Directors at New Visions and NYSARC. A man ahead of his time, he was advocating group homes and prevention back in the 1950s.
Dad's quest to learn never ceased. He and Mom traveled to many Elderhostels. After her passing in 2000, he continued locally with HILL and Oasis courses, often suggesting course topics and persuading local leaders to lecture.
Milton was known to always ask provocative questions, no matter the venue.
Dad was a lifelong member of Consumers Union, and kept every issue of Consumer Reports dating back to 1932.
Dad's love for and knowledge of cars was well known. I know he and Mom are taking road trips together in his favorite cars; his father's 1930 Jordan, and his 1949 Dodge.
