Obituary of Stanley I. Kivort

Stanley Kivort, 76, of Niskayuna, passed away on Sunday, January 13 after a long illness. Born in Kingston, NY, to Bella and Abraham Kivort, he was raised in Warnerville, NY. A graduate of Cobleskill High School and Syracuse University with a BS in Management, he worked for Gimbels and Abraham & Strauss in New York City before returning to the Capital District to join his father in the scrap business in 1961. Mr. Kivort was President of Kivort Steel, Inc. from 1965 - 1998 when he was pleased to turn the presidency of the company over to his son Robert. Long active in his community, Mr. Kivort was the charter president of the Richmondville Lions Club and later, Lions 20Y2 District Governor in 72/73. He was president of the Schenectady Jewish Community Center in 1978 & 1979 and remained active on the Board of Trustees to the present day. He was also president of the Schenectady Jewish Federation, playing a significant role in the merger with the Albany Federation into what is now known as the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York. He was on the national board of the Council of Jewish Federations from 1987 -1989 and then served them as National Secretary, 1989 - 1991. For thirteen years, Mr. Kivort served on the Board of Bellevue Women's Hospital. For sixteen years he served on the national board of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society and for 15 years on the board of the New York Association for New Americans. He was a driving force in the development of the Capital Region Maritime Center on property he donated in Alplaus. He leaves his wife of 52 years, Josie Goldman Kivort, two beloved sons and daughters in law: Michael Kivort and Patricia Parker of Houston, Texas, and Robert and Jocelyn Kivort of Voorheesville. He received enormous joy from his four granddaughters: Abigail, Samantha, Olivia and Mirielle Kivort. He also leaves his brother Adrian Kivort of Rexford. Funeral services for Mr. Kivort will be held on Wednesday, January 16, at 1:00 PM at Congregation Agudat Achim, 2117 Troy Schenectady Rd. in Niskayuna, followed by interment at the Agudat Achim Cemetery in Rotterdam. A period of mourning will be held at the family residence in Niskayuna beginning on Wednesday evening at 7:30 for a week In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Upper Mid-Atlantic Region of Hadassah, Attention Molly Getnick, Haddassh, the Golub Center 184 Washington Avenue Extension ; Albany, NY 12205 or the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York.
