Obituary of Ira J. Singer
Ira J. Singer, age 83, of the Avila Retirement Community in Albany, NY died Monday evening, November 26, 2012, at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home after a brief illness. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Mr. Singer resided most of his life in the Capital District area, moving here from Boston, Massachusetts. Mr. Singer attended high school in Brooklyn, NY and was an Army veteran during the Korean Conflict. He attended RCA Institute and the New York Workshop for TV training. He had been employed as an engineer for the New York State Network which was a division of the New York State Education Department and was later employed by Ampex Corporation, TV station WNAC in Boston as well as WTEN in Albany. He retired in 1990 from WMHT. Mr. Singer was a member of Congregation Gates of Heaven in Schenectady and served as the president of the congregation during the 1970s. He was also active with the Temple Brotherhood. He was a member of the VFW Post in Clifton Park and was a member of the Knights of Pythias in Albany.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Elaine Sanft Singer. Beloved father of Stephen (Jan) Singer of Watertown, Massachusetts, Len (Judy) Singer of Malta, NY and David (Chris) Singer of Newton, Massachusetts. Grandfather of Dan, Jake, Emma, Sam, Natalie, Chloe and Amelia. He also leaves his sister-in-law Jean Singer of Tamarac, Florida. He was predeceased by two brothers Stanley and Sid Singer.
Services at Congregation Gates of Heaven, 852 Ashmore Avenue, Schenectady, NY on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 10:00 am. Interment will follow in the Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Schenectady, NY. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday afternoon from 3:00-5:00 pm at the Avila Retirement Community, 100 White Pine Drive, Albany, NY.
