Obituary of Esther Schaffer
Esther Schaffer of Albany passed away on November 6,2011 in Phoenixville, PA after a long illness. She was the loving wife of the late Fred Schaffer.
Esther was born on May 13, 1918 in Albany, one of eight children of Louis and Rachael Canter. She is survived by her children, Michael and Linda Schaffer of Brockport, NY, Jeff and Pat Schaffer of Latham, NY, Barbara and Kurt TeKolste of Phoenixville, PA, and Karen and Robert Gaither of Akron, Ohio. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Greg and his wife, Sally, Dan, Keala, Rachel, Allison and her husband, Michael , Maddie, and Alana, one great-grandchild, Andrew and her brothers Harold Canter and Norman Canter.
During WWII she lived in California prior to Fred's service in the Pacific Theater. She was an active member of Temple Israel and a lifetime member of Hadassah. Esther worked for the State of New York Department of Health prior to her retirement in 1987.
She loved to golf, play bridge, play the piano, dance, play ping pong and swim -- pursuits that she enjoyed until recently. She was an excellent cook, leaving a rich legacy of recipes for her children and grandchildren.
Services at the Levine Memorial Chapel. 649 Washington Avenue Albany, NY on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 11:00am. Interment will follow in the Temple Israel Cemetery on Western Avenue in Guilderland, NY
