Obituary of Albert Cohen

. Albert (Abe) Cohen of Bayside, Queens, died on October 17, 2012, at the age of 89, peacefully in his home that he shared with his wife Selma Cohen for over 50 years. Abe and Selma celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in February 2011 and Selma predeceased him in June 2011. Abe is survived by his four children, Henry (Pam), Ellen, Danny (Nancy), all of Westchester and Jeff (Debbie) of Slingerlands. Abe also has seven loving grandchildren, Jillian, Sam, Matthew, Jessica, Ashley, Lizzy and Angelo. Abe was a mechanical engineer, earning a degree at CUNY of which he was very proud. After his engineering career, he went back into the family business, running a clothing store, Cohen and Ruskin, which his father started in the 1930s. Abe was a skilled mechanic, woodworker, craftsman and gardener. He would spend hours in his workshop, tinkering and fixing things and working with his favorite wood, red oak. He was also very proud of his rose bushes that the pedestrians on 205th Street enjoyed as they walked by. He did not even mind when somebody could not resist and picked a rose for its beauty and fragrance. Abe's true love and passion was his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family. He had a very special and deep fondness for his many nieces and nephews. Over the past 5 years he developed a deep and trusted friendship with Jennifer, who was both Selma's and his caregiver. The burial will take place in Queens, NY. Jeff and Debbie will be receiving visitors on Saturday October 20th at 7PM , and both Sunday and Monday October 21 and 22 from 3 to 5 PM and again at 7 PM at their home at 24 Cayuga Court, Slingerlands. Those wishing to remember Abe in a special way may make a memorial contribution to the Congregation Ohav Shalom Capital Campaign Fund, 113 New Krumkill Road Albany, NY 12208 OR the Huntington's Disease Society of America at www.hdsa.org.
