I I did not know Meir well but I wept to hear of his passing because he was so young, so deeply loved, and shone so brightly. I had the incredible privilege of meeting the whole O'Brien family together when they came to stay at our apartment for Shoshana's graduation from the University of Chicago in 2011. It stands out vividly in my memory the happy, busy bustle of activity that is only possible with a large group of brilliant siblings who are also good friends. I remember Meir standing behind the sofa shouting "Shoshana! Shoshana!" trying to get her attention for a joke, his calls utterly lost in the crosshairs of other brothers and sisters yelling other names. I was pleased to hear he was attending UC, the fourth of his siblings to do so. A dynasty of scholars, I thought. I was stunned to hear that he was so seriously ill at such a young age, and that he was diagnosed in Kauai. Having visited Shoshana there myself, I imagined that he was looking forward to a summer in beautiful surroundings with his older sister showing him her favorite beaches and introducing him to the same jovial Jewish community I met during a Purim party. It was alarming to hear that adequate facilities for his treatment did not exist on the island. But with the optimism that comes from seeing his sister Nehama and his friends raise the $60,000 needed for his emergency medical flight in one day, and the complete devotion of his other sisters Nathana and Shoshana in his care, I was sure he would win his fight. The heartbreak that came with news of his passing was coupled with a sense of unsettling disbelief. The huge network of people coming out to share their memories of Meir, and stories about how he has already made the world better despite his short time in it, has had a comforting effect. I hope it provides something of the same to his grieving family. I give all my love to all the O’Briens in this time of tragedy, and thank them for making Meir’s life of insatiable curiosity, endless generosity, and beloved kinship among family, friends, and peers possible.

Dear Shoshana, family and friends of Meir O'Brien,
I’m am hard pressed to find the words to express my sorrow for both you and your family during this difficult time. I was very privileged to have meet Meir for 1 of his short 20 years of life on this earth and during that, although brief time he made one of the biggest impacts on my own life.
When I first meet him just over a year ago I saw a young man who reminded me of myself not too long ago. He was very kind, intelligent, and never afraid to speak his mind but very willing to listen and find value in anything you would say to him. That day I was thrilled to meet yet another member of the O’Brien clan and have some unforgettable experiences in San Francisco with him. From exploring Sandford’s campus, eating at In and Out Burger, to celebrating your birthday, in all my life I had never meet anyone so young yet so full of life. His passion for politics stood out for me and felt it was well suited for him having a very likable personality.
As sad as this all is, I find some solace in knowing he spent his final few weeks in paradise with us on Kauai. I felt privileged to show him around the island, take him to play basketball with my friends at Wailua Houselots park, celebrate Jessica’s birthday at Moloa’a bay, take him snorkeling at Lydgate beach park, and teaching him how to prepare for getting his drivers license at Vidinha Stadium parking lot. These are memories I’ll take with me forever.
Although it hurts to recall these good times, his life has thought me to live every day to the fullest. You are always going to wish you had more time so we should make the most of the time we have now. I know God has a plan for us and I pray that Meir is in heaven now with your father watching down on all of us.
Love,
Abraham

I had the privilege of teaching Meir Debate, U. S. History, and U. S. Constitutional History, as well as sailing. Meir was a brilliant student and brightened my classroom with his wit and intellect. I believe he was destined to do great things for humanity. I am so sorry he was struck down at such an early age.
To his family and friends I would like to extend my sincere condolences. May his short but purposeful life serve as an example for us all to follow. Rest In Peace Meir.
Your fan,
Charles Newell

To Meir's family,
My name is Jeffrey Stackert, and I had the privilege of teaching Meir in my Introduction to the Hebrew Bible course at the University of Chicago last year. Meir was a wonderful student, as you no doubt know: he was a smart and curious thinker who saw deeply into the material under examination. He was also very generous and kind. I enjoyed so much sitting with Meir during my office hours talking about the details of his work. We also talked about his ideas and larger ambitions. Meir's smile would light up the room, and I will remember fondly his easy laugh and gentle spirit. I'm so very sorry for your loss. May Meir's memory be a blessing to you and to all of us who were so fortunate to know him.
Sincerely yours,
Jeffrey Stackert
