I worked for years with Hal at the Health Department and was one of many who simply loved him. He was brilliantly intelligent, funny, and ever so kind. To his parents, you did yourselves proud raising such an ethical and respected man who left his mark on the world. To his children, live your lives emulating his principles and you'll have a life worth living. And to Mari, I hope you find some solace in knowing how beloved was this man who wanted to share his life with you.
Sincerest condolences.

I worked in the Health Department with Hal and our paths crossed only a few times but it was always a pleasure to see him. There was something good and decent about Hal that made me feel happy to be in his company. I'm sad to read of his passing and offer my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Hal was a colleague of mine in the profession of law and a fellow alumnus of the University of Michigan. In my representation of clients before the Department of Health, I always respected Hal for his integrity, professionalism and good sense of humor. He was an honorable public servant and credit to the legal profession. I extend my sincerest condolences to his entire Family and to his colleagues in Counsel's office at DOH.- Neil Murray

I am saddened to hear of this. Hal was a colleague at the Department of Health. I remember him as a kind, compassionate, intelligent man who seemed to get along with everyone, a skilled attorney and a mensch. My thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences go out to his family.

I got to know Hal only over the last few years, during his time with Ostroff Associates. The firm engaged OA to represent us in Albany, I was the "client face", and Hal was part of the team assigned to our account. I just liked Hal. I liked how he dispensed his legal insights. I liked the way he dispensed advice. I liked the way we'd talk business and shoot the breeze. I liked his anecdotes. I liked spending time with him. I mourn your loss.

Dear Mari, Liz, & Mark,
I'm so sorry to hear the news of Hal's passing. Such a tragedy. He was so full of life just a very short while ago. At Rachel's Bat Mitzvah, who would have guessed we would be losing him so soon?
I was so glad to have gotten to know Hal, even for just a couple of years. When we were growing up, we didn't really spend any time together, so I felt fortunate to have a chance to as adults. Of course I expected we would have many more years to enjoy our connection...
What a beautiful obituary. What a community minded man Hal was - a true mensch. It's so unfortunate and unfair how much he had to go through this past year, with the struggles around treatment, the loss of Rich, and his bodily pain. I'm relieved that he won't have to suffer any more.
I will be at the funeral tomorrow morning, at which time I can express my love and support to you all in person. Please know that I'm thinking of all of you throughout each day. I hope we will continue to keep our connection with each other. You have become an important part of our family, as young as our acquaintance is. We will grieve together tomorrow.
With a heavy heart,
Judith

Hal was a real gentleman and a stand up guy, well liked by all who knew him. He died way young and his death is a great loss to the community. My sympathy to his wife, children and parents, who unfortunately outlived all their children. Speaking as a parent, the worst thing in life is to outlive your children, so I feel especially sad for his parents.

I'm so sorry for your loss and offer my sincere condolences. I first met Hal when he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Albany County Mental Health Association, an organization I served as its Director in the 1970s. Years later our paths crossed again when we both worked with the State Health Department. Hal was a good person, devoted to his family and tireless in his pursuit of justice through his chosen profession, the practice of law. May you find comfort as you grieve and may his memory be for a blessing.
