Obituary of Richard S. Ganz

Atlanta -- Richard S. Ganz, age 99, passed away on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2017, the 10-year anniversary of the death of his beloved wife, Connie. Born on August 9, 1917, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended New York University’s Fashion Merchandise Institute where he met his future wife of 65 years, Corrine Marcus. He worked as a merchandiser for several major department stores in New England before relocating to Trenton, New Jersey. He assumed a merchandising role at S. P. Dunham & Co., where he spent close to the next 50 years rising to the level of Executive Vice President. He also served in the United States Army during World War II, stationed in the Pacific Theater. He was active in his community, serving on the Boards of Boy Scouts of America, Kiwanis, and Temple Har Sinai and was President of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. After his retirement, he audited classes at Princeton University and worked as a volunteer in Zimbabwe and Panama teaching department store operators in those developing countries American techniques of merchandising and department store management. Eventually, he moved to Florida, where he continued to play golf and tennis until his 96th birthday, when he moved to Atlanta to receive care in the community where his daughter resides. He is predeceased by his wife Connie. He is survived by a brother, Arthur Ganz of New York City; a daughter, Dr. Margery Ganz of Atlanta, Georgia; a son, Robert (Dorothy) Ganz of Slingerlands, New York; grandchildren Joel Reuben Ganz of New York City; Miriam (Dan) Horwitz of Huntington Woods, Michigan; and Kayla (Jarrad Haning) Ganz of Nashville, Tennessee; and great-grandchildren, Jonah and Micah Horwitz. His remains will be interred in the Beth Emeth Cemetery in Loudonville in the spring. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC or the American Red Cross.
