Obituary of Charles Smith
Charles A. Smith, 73, of Ravena, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2016, in Albany. He was born in Albany on October 11, 1943 to Gladys and Abraham “Harry” Smith. His family moved to Brooklyn when he was three years old. Predeceased by his parents, Charles is survived by his wife, Sharon Weber; children, Jennifer and Benjamin; and brothers, Stephen and Robert (Kay), other relatives, friends and very special pets, Precious and Casper.
Charlie was known for his concern for others which led him to his future volunteer and professional careers after working for the Associated Press in NYC. During his 15-year Auxiliary Police service in Brooklyn, he served as Lieutenant -in-Command of the Prospect Park Auxiliary Police Patrol Unit and Aux. Lieutenant with the 70th Police Precinct. He served as president of the 67th and 70th Police Precinct Community Councils. He worked as crime prevention project director for a community-based development agency where he made many friends through the civilian radio patrol program. As a result of his accomplishments with this program, he was recognized by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services.
In 1986, Charlie and Sharon moved to Albany where his parents had returned some years before. Charlie worked for the Albany County Probation Department, retiring in 2009, while working for the NYS Thruway as a part-time toll collector.
Services will be held Friday, December 16 at 12:00 pm at Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave., Albany. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send donations to Mohawk Hudson Humane 3 Oakland Avenue Menands, NY 12204
