Obituary of Arlene Olinsky
Arlene (Steinkohl) Olinsky
November 15, 2016
Beloved wife, sister, mother, and grandmother Arlene Olinsky of Royal Palm Beach, FL, born April 29, 1935, in New York, died on November 15, 2016. Arlene is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, Alan; daughter, Sheryl Olinsky Borg and her husband Nicholas Borg of Union, NJ, and the source of her tremendous pride and joy, grandchildren Nick and Nina. Arlene was pre-deceased by her parents, Benjamin and Rae Steinkohl, and her beloved daughter, Beth Adrienne.
Everyone who knew Arlene knew she was an incredibly brilliant writer, known most recently for her many letters to the editor on local politics. During her career she worked as the Assistant to the President at Chicago State University, a Statistician at New York State Higher Education Services Corporation, and a Nuclear Physicist at General Electric. She earned her Bachelor of Arts, and was elected Phi Beta Kappa, from Hunter College and held a Master’s Degree of Public Administration from State University of New York at Albany. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Bonn, Germany, an accomplishment of which she was tremendously proud.
She was adored by her loving grandchildren Nick and Nina, and spent visits with them working through complicated math homework problems, playing board games for hours on end, and making up stories “from her imagination”, invented tales that filled her grandchildren with wonder and delight every time. Affectionately nicknamed “The Gorgeous Grandma”, Arlene traveled just weeks ago to share in the joy of her grandson’s Bar Mitzvah, saying it was the happiest day of her life.
Arlene showed her warm compassion for animals by adopting senior dogs, most recently bringing Ashley, a beautiful Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, into the family.
