Obituary of Muriel Shapiro
MURIEL SHAPIRO
After a long illness, Muriel passed away on April 26, 2016. For some 10 years or so, Muriel suffered from Scoliosis and Osteoporosis, which led to a major operation for a Hiatal Hernia on January 31, 2013. Her affliction caused much discomfort and pain, which she courageously resisted. She now lies in peace, which she richly deserves.
Muriel, an only child, was born in Brooklyn to her parents Harry and Gladys Golub, on August 24, 1934. She is a graduate of Queens College with a major in education. She taught at elementary schools in Long Island, Pennsylvania and New York. While residing in Niskayuna, Muriel was the preferred substitute at the Latham Ridge School of the North Colonie School System for over 30 years.
On August 3, 1958. Muriel married Wilbur Shapiro and they have had a happy marriage for 58 years. Son Geoffrey was born on September 1, 1959 and today he has a successful career as a cancer doctor at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Geoffrey attributes much of his success to Muriel’s mothering and influence. In summary, Muriel was a truly dedicated wife, mother and teacher.
Muriel loved to laugh and discuss family events. She was a great conversationalist and has made many friends wherever she happened to be: such as at The Latham Ridge School, at the Agudat Achim Synagogue, and at Avila, the senior living community where she resided with Wilbur for the last 5 years.
Muriel is survived by husband Wilbur and son Geoffrey.
