Obituary of Sidney Allen Friedson

Sidney Allen Friedson, age 93, passed away on March 5, 2016 at his home in Colonie surrounded by his family. Known as Allen or Alley to his family, but Sid to everyone else, he was born and raised in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. A veteran of World War II, Sid became a licensed optician and moved to the Schenectady area in 1957 establishing his optical practice, Glenville Opticians, on Saratoga Road in the town of Glenville. The practice was closed in 1990 and Sid continued working as an optician for Empire Vision in Latham until retiring at age 90 in 2012. Allen is survived by loving family including his wife Phyllis, his son Arthur Friedson (Deborah) of Niskayuna, his daughter Debbie Mandell (Lee) of Rockaway, NJ, his grandchildren Andrew Friedson (Molly) of Denver, CO, Matthew Friedson of Albany, Mark Mandell of Queens, NY, Melissa Martin (Scott) of Webster, NY, his great-grandson Noah Friedson of Denver, CO, his sister Sylvia Peiken of Media, PA, and his many nieces and nephews. Allen was pre-deceased by his brother Dr. Bernard Friedson formerly of Saratoga Springs. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 7, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. at Congregation Agudat Achim, 2117 Union Street, Niskayuna followed by interment at the Agudat Achim cemetery, Schermerhorn Street in Rotterdam. The shiva period of mourning will be observed at the home of Arthur & Deborah Friedson in Niskayuna beginning Monday after the funeral through Friday afternoon and will resume on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. Donations in memory of Sidney Allen Friedson may be made to either the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Northeastern New York, 455 Patroon Creek Blvd., Albany, NY 12206 or to Congregation Agudat Achim.
