Obituary of Elizabeth B. Milstein

Elizabeth (“Bette”) Buff Milstein passed away peacefully on December 16, with her family at her side. She was born in Schenectady, New York, the daughter of the late Harry and Goldie Buff. She was predeceased by her loving husband and best friend Jay Milstein. She is survived by her children, Jeanne Milstein (Jo Ann Church) of West Hartford, CT, Susan Milstein (Marc Kaplan) of Menands, and James Milstein (Amy) of Slingerlands, and her beloved grandchildren, Dr. Rosara Milstein Bass,( Dr.Geoffrey Bass) Joseph Milstein and Elena Kaplan. She is also survived by her brother Alfred Buff, and predeceased by her sisters Faye Kantor and Rita Bemporad, and her brother, Morris Buff. She was a graduate of Russell Sage College with a degree in social work. During World War II, she worked at General Electric. She began her career as a social worker at the Schenectady County Department of Social Services. When her children were born, she enjoyed being a stay at home mother while her husband launched his career as an attorney. She fostered and encouraged education, outdoor activities, independence, music, and a sense of adventure. She instilled the importance of family, both immediate and extended. The family’s fondest memories are summers spent at Caroga Lake, at the family camp, which have been enjoyed by four generations. She returned to work as an Albany County probation officer. After she retired, she became active in community activities including volunteering at the Albany Jewish Community Center and the Albany County Cooperative Extension. She was a voracious reader and an adept bridge player. She loved a good political debate. She loved playing piano especially encouraging sing-a-longs. Bette was actively involved in the lives of her grandchildren, and instilled the same values in them that she did with her children. She was always seen at her grandchildren’s activities and took great pride in their accomplishments. To the end, Bette remained young at heart and in spirit. She maintained her independence, her sense of humor, her love of music, her exercise regimen, her competitive card playing skills and her quest of knowledge. She enjoyed a good laugh and being surrounded by the people she loved. The family is grateful for the care and support provided by Dr. Gary Bakst, and the remarkable team of caregivers.
