Obituary of Sylvia Katz
Sylvia Katz, 87, passed peacefully on Friday evening, September 4, 2015 at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh in New Jersey. Sylvia was born in New York City on February 5, 1928, the second oldest of four children, to Anna and Harry Dorogusker. She graduated from Eastern District High School in Brooklyn, then went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College and a master’s degree from Montclair State College. She worked for many years as an employment counselor for the state of New Jersey and was passionate about helping people receive job training and find jobs in order to make better lives for themselves. Sylvia was president of her IAPES chapter and was much admired for the increased chapter membership and program attendance that was fostered under her leadership. She was very involved in her synagogue, Temple Beth El of North Bergen, having served as sisterhood president and long-time volunteer. She was a long-time member of B’nai Brith and Hadassah.
After her retirement, Sylvia volunteered in many capacities; as an administrate assistant at Meadowlands Hospital, as a literacy coach in several schools in New Jersey, and as a volunteer for kosher Meals on Wheels.
Sylvia is survived by her daughter Laura (Edward) Jacobs of Delmar, NY, Asher Katz of Santa Fe, NM, her grandchildren, Lisa Jacobs, Tami (Eitan) Earnest, Menachem, Perl, Enya, Sholom, and Devora Katz, her great granddaughter, Aria Earnest, and her brother, Ben (Claire) Dorogusker.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Phillip Katz, sister, Frieda (Seymour) Jacobson, and brother, Stanley Dorogusker.
The funeral will be held in Paramus, NJ, on Tuesday, at Cedar Park/Beth El Cemetery. Shiva will be observed at the home of Laura and Ed Jacobs. Evening services will be held at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, 6:45 pm Wednesday and Thursday, with afternoon visiting hours from 12:30-4:30 on Wednesday and Thursday, and 10:00-noon on Friday morning. Donations may be made in Sylvia’s memory to Congregation Ohav Shalom in Albany, the Jewish Home at Rockleigh, NJ, or the charity of your choice.
