Obituary of Sarah Siegel
With courage and optimism until her final hour, Sarah Siegel passed away in Delray Beach, FL She was 92, the last surviving sibling of a close-knit family from downtown Albany, where she met and married a handsome returning GI from Brooklyn. She will now be reunited with Teddy, who died in 2008, and her beloved sisters and brothers and parents Molly Kritz and Julius Saltzman.
Sarah was a woman of keen intelligence, wit, style and many talents , but most beloved was her compassion for all whose lives she touched. Her speech was ever wise and the law of kindness was always on her lips. In the 70’s she was a founding member of the DWOL and retired from a wonderful career working for the NYS Assembly. After retirement, she pursued charitable work and was a past president of one of the oldest chapels of the United Order of True Sisters, a cancer service organization. Her life was full and every day she expressed gratitude for it, spiritually and to her loved ones who respected her dignity and Independence to the end. Her legacy was Jewish Mother to the World.
Sarah is survived by her devoted children Gary Siegel ( Peggy Hasselwander), Resa Siegel Tanner (George Tanner; grandchildren Sam Tanner, Melissa Bookwalter ( Andrew) , George Tanner III ( Julie); great –granchiildren Meghan , Sarah, Jake and Emmett; her dear brother-in –law Len Cohen , sister-in-law Marilyn Saltzman, dear friend Leah Schenkel and her fourth sister by love, Marilyn Ference. She was predeceased by siblings Herman Saltzman, Martha Stagnitta, Abe Saltzman , Ida Privler and Marian Cohen. Also survived by many nieces and nephews of whom she was very fond.
Services at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue in Albany on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at 11:00am. Interment will follow in the Independent Benevolent Cemetery in Albany. The family requests that no flowers be sent, however those wishing to remember Sarah in a special way may make a memorial contribution to a charity of your choice. Friends and family are invited to celebrate her life following the funeral at 13 Sandalwood Drive in Colonie, NY.
