Obituary of Dorothy Mae Rosenblum
Dorothy M. (Levine) Rosenblum, age 72, of Albany and Boynton Beach, FL passed away peacefully on August 8, 2015 with her family by her side after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Springfield, MA on July 31, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Alice and Sidney Levine and sister of the late Mary (Abe) Kleinman.
Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Warren; her children Laurie Cartier of Stratford, CT, Jonathan (Shari) Rosenblum of Slingerlands, and Stephanie (Jaron) Rubenstein of Westfield, NJ; her grandchildren Ari and Marisa Rosenblum and Alyssa and Noah Rubenstein; her sister Betty (Vladamir) Zivkovic of Philadelphia, PA; and her brother Edward (Roberta) Levine of Palm Beach Gardens, FL.
Dorothy received her Bachelor’s degree from SUNY Albany in 1963 at the age of only 19. She then married and had her first two children before returning part time to SUNY Albany to earn her Master’s degree and teaching certification in 1972. She was a devoted homemaker who always put her family first, but still found time to teach business classes at several area institutions and work as a part time bookkeeper for many years at a handful of local companies. As an avid reader, crossword puzzle solver, card and board game player she especially cherished the time sharing these pursuits with her children and grandchildren. She was always active, frequently playing tennis and participating in Jazzercise classes.
She also felt it was important to give back to her community. For many years she actively volunteered in the Albany Medical Center child oncology unit and participated (including a term as president) in United Order of True Sisters #3, a cancer service organization. Her and her husband’s ardent commitment to the Jewish principle of Tikkun Olam (making the world a better place) started with the notion that they felt blessed to have the means to give generous philanthropic support to numerous organizations including Jewish Federation of NENY, Daughters of Sarah Foundation, Jewish National Fund, Hadassah, and Chabad of Greater Boynton Beach Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to any of the above or the Community Hospice.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the entire team at NY Oncology Hematology, nurses at both St. Peter’s Hospital 3 Macaulay wing and the Community Hospice. Your dedication to providing the best care and support possible, all with the highest levels of compassion, will never be forgotten.
