Obituary of Bernard Leon Schachter
Niskayuna- After 85 years of making lifelong friends wherever he went, Bernard Schachter passed away on April 17, 2015. His passing will no doubt leave a palpable void in the lives of his family and all those lucky enough to have known him.
Born on August 13, 1929, Bernie grew up in the Bronx. Sledding down Jerome Avenue, sitting in the bleachers at Yankee Stadium, and riding the subway to Coney Island for a nickel, were just a few of the many stories that made us envious of his childhood. After marrying his high school sweetheart Dorothy, they moved to Schenectady in 1951 and started their family.
For 40 years, Bernie was associated with Sofco Paper. His ability to understand the needs of his customers, and the honesty and integrity he brought to his profession, elevated him to Vice President of Sales. Upon retiring, he redirected his talents and formed Dana Marketing. He continued doing what he loved most for another 20 years; working hard, making new friends, and taking care of his family. He generated enduring friends locally as well as coast to coast. The skycaps in airports he flew through, and waiters from every restaurant he frequented, knew Bernie by name.
He enjoyed gardening in his backyard, golfing at Shaker Ridge Country Club, and going to the opera. Bernie was an excellent cook; his happy hour presentations were feasts we will never forget. As a member of the Schenectady Masonic Lodge, he served as Master and went on to become District Deputy. Recognizing his desire to improve the lives of senior citizens, Bernie was elected to the board of trustees of the Masonic Home in Utica. During his tenure, he initiated and brought to fruition many projects benefitting the residents. In addition, he served on the board at Congregation Beth Israel Synagogue.
The driving force of his life was his family. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Dorothy, his three children, Alan (Gina), Neil (Susan), and Arlene (Gary). He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
