Obituary of Sherman Allen Gates
Sherman A. Gates M.D., age 92 of Lyons Avenue in Delmar, NY died on Tuesday morning, February 10, 2015 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany. Sherman was born and grew up in Scituate, Massachusetts. He received his undergraduate degree from Brown University and his degree in Medicine from Boston University. He was an internist specializing in Endocrinology and a noted expert in the treatment of Diabetes. He was a dedicated physician to his patients, a beloved teacher, a research scientist and mentor at the Albany Stratton Veterans Administration Medical Center for 46 years. As Chief of Endocrinology, he pioneered the use of the insulin pump to allow diabetics to have personal control over their insulin needs; this dramatically improved their quality of life. He rose through the academic ranks to become a Professor of Medicine at Albany Medical School. In recognition and appreciation for his dedicated and loyal service from 1953 until 1999, he was elected an Honorary Alumnus and given the title Professor Emeritus. The Veterans Affairs Specialty Practices Wing at the Albany Stratton Veterans Administration Medical Center was dedicated to him in honor of his years of service devoted to the care of Veterans.
For 60 years Sherman was the loving husband of Kitt Gates (deceased), a devoted father to Linda Gates Nettleton (John) of South Orange, New Jersey, Stephen Gates (Lesley) of Alexandria, Virginia, Michael Gates (JoAnn) of Groton, Massachusetts and Judith Rychcik (Mike) of Delmar, NY. and the beloved grandfather of Jacob and Jesse Nettleton, Emily, Shaina, Kevin and Jason Gates and Brian and Chloe Rychcik.
Services at Temple Israel, 600 New Scotland Avenue, Albany on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at 11 am. Interment will follow in the Temple Israel Cemetery in Guilderland, NY.
