Jon Kohn

Obituary of Jon William Kohn

Jon William Kohn, 50, of Albany, New York, was laid to rest on Sunday, February 8th. Jon’s life, and the lives of those who loved him, was forever changed when, at the age of 16, he suffered a traumatic brain injury when he slipped and fell while hiking in Israel with a group of teenagers. Jon was a sweet and lovable kid, who attended the Hebrew Academy and Albany High. Always a big sports fan, Jon enjoyed sharing his commentary on John Graney’s sports talk show, even though he was only eleven. Fans of the show always looked forward to hearing Jon the Mets’ fan. This early introduction to sports radio inspired Jon to dream of becoming a professional sports journalist. Although his dreams were shattered, and unable to walk or talk, Jon never gave up on life. He spent the first 13 months after his injury in Israel, where he received excellent care. Jon’s mother, Nancy, stayed with him in Israel while his father, Ronald, flew back and forth. Once he returned to the States, Jon spent most of his life at what is now called Diamond Hill, a nursing facility in Lansingburgh. His parents devoted their lives to his care and struggled to provide Jon with the best life possible. Their love showed and Jon responded the best way he could, always with a big heart and love. Although he couldn’t talk, Jon was able to express himself through smiles and hugs. He was never happier than when he had company. He loved everyone and everyone loved him back. He especially enjoyed seeing his nieces and nephews. Despite all his problems, Jon gave the world his best. With every medical setback, Jon fought his hardest and overcame obstacle after obstacle. His courage and tenacity to hang on to life was a remarkable example for all about the power of the human spirit. His spirit soared and he was everyone’s hero. Predeceased by his father, Ronald Kohn, Jon is survived by his mother, Nancy, sister Susan Kohn and her son, Gabriel, his brother Michael and Roni Kohn, their children, Liran, Ariel, Li-or and Avi-ya, as well as Avielle Chana, his great niece. His family would like to thank all the relatives and friends who gave Jon joy and comfort over the years. A special thanks goes to all the medical and nursing personnel who took such great care of him. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Brain Injury Association of New York or the charity of one’s choice.
