Obituary of Alan S. Rubenstein

Alan S. Rubenstein died on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY. He was 89. Born on January 3, 1926 in Troy, NY, he was the oldest son of Esther and Lewis Rubenstein. He attended college at RPI and graduated from there in April, 1945 with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, going on to Midshipman’s School at Columbia after which he served as an Ensign in the US Navy on the USS Sargent Bay in the Pacific theater. After completing his service, he graduated with a Master’s Degree in electrical engineering also at RPI and went to work at General Electric. He retired in 1986 after 38 years at General Electric. After retiring from General Electric, he was employed at RPI in their advanced manufacturing program. Just over 65 years ago, on December 4 1949, he married Sonia Horowitz. He loved chocolate, sailing, the opera, and bicycling (achieving his first century when he was almost 60) and he loved to examine a problem until he figured it out. He celebrated the successes of his four children and his grandchildren and is lovingly remembered by all of them. Besides his wife, he is survived by his two daughters; Leah Rubenstein and her husband Paul Tellers; Lisa Rubenstein and her husband Richard DuVall; and his two sons, David Rubenstein and his partner Brian Grundstrom; and Daniel Rubenstein and his wife, Meg. Alan’s brother, Saul Rubenstein, pre-deceased him. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Eddie, Rachel and Jake Rubenstein; Michael and Hannah Muehl; and Rebecca and Molly DuVall and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Services at Congregation Gates of Heaven, 852 Ashmore Avenue Schenectady, NY on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 11:00am.
