Obituary of Gladys Karlin
Gladys H. Karlin, age 93 of Albany, formerly of Schenectady, NY passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2014 at her residence at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home. Gladys was born in Bronx, NY and was the daughter of the late Max and Pauline Hirsch. She is predeceased by her brother, Donald Hirsch, her husband of 63 years Jack, and their son Roy. Gladys is survived by her son Michael (Lisa) of Ballston Lake, NY and her daughter in law Jane (Roy) of NYC. Gladys is also survived by her two grandchildren Paula (Jeff Williams) of Syracuse, NY and David Karlin of NYC. Gladys was very proud of her great grandchild Jack Williams of Syracuse.
Gladys worked for over 20 years at the Schenectady County Public Library, where she held various positions including Personnel Director. After retirement, Gladys was a volunteer for Planned Parenthood and then Literacy Volunteers.
Gladys enjoyed attending many family reunions. During the 60’s she enjoyed traveling with her family to NYC to attend Broadway theater. Gladys enjoyed attending local theater and cultural events, which included the Union College Concert Series and Capital Repertory productions. After retirement, Gladys and her husband Jack enjoyed traveling both in the United States and abroad. Gladys and Jack enjoyed wintering in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Gladys found great pleasure in cooking for her family and friends, knitting, reading, playing Mah Jong, Scrabble and playing card games.
Throughout Gladys’ life she worked and supported issues related to Peace and Human and Civil Rights issues. During the Viet Nam War, Gladys was the co-chairperson from the Capital District for the “Banners for Peace“ project. Along with residents from the Capital District and across the United States, they were able to circle the Pentagon with their “Banners for Peace.”
There will be a private burial and a memorial service will be held at a future date. The family would like to thank the staff from The Massry Assisted Living Center and Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home for their loving care and support
