Obituary of Daniel Gerberg
DANIEL GERBERG
1919-2012
Daniel Gerberg, 92, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2012. He was born December 1919 in Brooklyn NY, the eldest of five children of Kalman and Bella Gerberg. After graduating Brooklyn College with a degree in Geology, he worked for the United States Department of Interior, where he helped map the route for the Alaskan Highway. He then joined the Army, serving in the 656th Engineer Topographical Battalion, preparing maps which guided General Patton's troops in the final stages of the European campaign of World War II.
After the war, he met and married the former Florence Chudnovsky, and then attended the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy. Upon graduation, they moved first to Ithaca and then to North Rose (Wayne County), New York, where he owned and ran a successful retail pharmacy and became a community leader. After 10 years, they moved to Bayside, Queens to be closer to their family. He joined the pharmacy staff of the New York City-operated Goldwater Memorial Hospital on Roosevelt Island, and soon became the Director of Pharmacy, a position he held until he retired at the age of 66.
His warmth and tenderness touched everyone he met. He loved woodworking, gardening, and music, mastering the intricacies of each hobby through self-study and experimentation. He also had a passion for reading and learning, especially about history, science and language. But most of all, he loved his family.
Mr. Gerberg is survived by his wife of 65 years, Florence Gerberg, his children Esther "Toby" Fleishman (Alan Fleishman) of New City, NY, Joseph K. Gerberg (Barbara Dangman) of Loudonville NY, and Amy Gerberg of Orange County CA, as well as by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His four siblings also survive him.
Services and interment will be held in the Mt. Ararat Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY on Wednesday, April 25, 2012. A local period of mourning will be observed at the residence of Joseph Gerberg on Thursday, April 26, 2012 from 5-8pm and on Sunday April 29, 2012 from 2-6pm
