Obituary of Gertrude Wallis

GERTRUDE WALLIS Gertrude Migdal Wallis died peacefully at St. Peter's Hospital on Saturday July 30, 2011. She was the daughter of the late Anna Valberg Migdal and Morris Migdal. Born in Amsterdam, NY on July 12, 1922, she graduated from Albany High School and then from Brady Maternity Hospital in 1943 as a licensed practical nurse. She was the widow of the late Reuben Wallis of London, England, where she spent 20 years as Head Mistress of the Jewish Zionist Early Childhood School before returning to Albany in 1987. Always a committed educator, she devoted much of her time in Albany working with children both privately and at the Albany JCC and Maimonides School where she was the beloved "Grandma Gert." She is survived by her son Wayne (Lindsey) and granddaughter Rebecca, sister Ruth Tenzer of Albany, and brothers Leonard (Anita) of Delray Beach, FL and Philip of San Diego, CA. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and a host of cousins . Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 12:30 pm at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center, 180 Washington Ave. Ext, Albany. Burial will follow at Congregation Sons of Israel Cemetery, Cranesville Hollow Road in Cranesville, NY. Shiva will be held on Tuesday evening at 7 pm (minyan) at the home of Bill and Adrienne Rockwood, 15 Milner Ave., Albany, NY. The family is grateful to the staff of Daughters of Sarah (DOS) for their kindness and concern during her stay. Donations in Gertrude's memory may be sent to the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center or a charity of one's choice
