Obituary of Norman Caplan

NORMAN CAPLAN 1918-2011 Norman Caplan, age 92, died on Wednesday evening, July 20, 2011 at his home in Camp Hill, PA. Norman was born in Troy, NY on October 11, 1918 and was the loving son of the late Samuel and Bessie Terk Caplan. Norman was a graduate of Troy High School and earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1940. He was the devoted husband of the late Evelyn Teper Caplan from Albany, NY for 52 years before her death in 1994. During World War II, Norman was a major in the Army Air Corps and received the Legion of Merit award for his work on radar. He went on to a distinguished career at Bendix and RCA, and in 1961, co-founded an electronics manufacturing firm, EFE Laboratories, in Horsham PA. Norman retired to Florida and in 2009, he returned to the Northeast to be with his daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Norman enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, birder, and sailor on his boat, the Lady Evelyn. He also enjoyed travel and skiing and was a passionate sports fan. He especially delighted in sharing these adventures with his four grandchildren. He was also an avid reader of history. In his later years, he took pride in being the central hub for communication among family members. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn Kuhn/Patrick Rardin and Candie/David Wilderman, his sister, Miriam Caplan Callner and his brother-in-law, Philip Callner, his four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind two beloved nephews and five grand nephews and nieces. His positive spirit, sage advice, boundless energy, and sense of humor will be missed by all. He was interred at Temple Israel Cemetery in Guilderland, NY next to his wife Evelyn on July 24, 2011.
