When I first met Dottie at Glenmont School, I was a noon hour aide in Sheryl Ricciardelli's classroom. She was volunteering there, helping the students complete projects. I found her to be a very caring person, who loved children. We shared a love for gardening, too, which we often talked about. We exchanged some plants from our gardens. I always enjoyed visiting with her. She was so enthusiastic about what she loved doing...helping children learn and gardening!

I knew Dottie for 40 years since teaching together at Glenmont School. She was a close friend and will be dearly missed. She was not only an excellent teacher, where her creativity turned her kindergarten classroom into a magical adventure for her students each day...but she was also a thoughtful friend, giving of her time and talents to help others. She helped her neighbors in need, volunteered her time in our classrooms on special projects, visited her friends at Beveryck. She made a positive difference with each student she taught...and touched all of our lives with her kindness. We were blessed knowing her...

To Dorothy's brother David, I am so sorry that I can not make Dottie's memorial service and reception. My husband and I have had plans for a long time to fly to Florida to visit my mother-in-law and a good friend. Dottie was a dear friend and volunteer my classroom for many years. My heart was broken when I was told of her passing. Please accept my most sincere condolences. Elsmere Elementary School has made a contribution to the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society in her honor. After I return from Florida, I would like to talk to the Elsmere Staff and faculty about another way to honor Dottie. David, I spoke to you over the phone when you were visiting Dottie in the hospital. I am hoping that you can send me your email address so that I can relay to you what we as a staff and faculty at Elsmere will do to honor Dottie's memory. Below you will find "A Letter to Dottie" that expresses my appreciation for your wonderful sister. God bless you and your family. May Dottie's memory be forever eternal. Missy Woller A Letter to Dottie To Dear Dottie, You had been with me for over 10 years in my classroom, so everyday, I will continue to wait for you to walk into my room and for our students to greet you by saying, “Good Morning Miss Weiss”. I want to hear that click of the door and to look up and see your gentle, kind face. Your quiet presence was always so welcoming, reassuring and calming. The pile of projects I put out for you to be cut, drawn, sorted etc... is still waiting for you at the end of our brown table. I am longing to hear your thoughts and ideas for upcoming activities. It is time for our end of the year performance. Who will create our scenery? Dottie, your artistic abilities amazed me! Oh, how I need a song for that upcoming special holiday. I can hear your voice singing to our students while using your tape recorder. That tape recorder was a hoot, you always had it on your lap. Most of our songs on chart paper are in your handwriting. No one will ever print as neatly as you Dottie. My bulletin boards are just not as creative. You always spiced them up with your unique flair. Where are you Dottie to help that small group of students or an individual child that needs extra attention. Millions of times I would turn my head and see the genuine smile upon a small face, because you helped that child reach that “ah-ha” (now I get it) moment. Where is that friend to hear me when I need to talk “teacher stuff?” Dottie, I would feel as if no one else was in the room because of the way you listened to me so intently. Many times I talked to you about my family and you made me feel like mother/wife of the year! Remember sharing all our dog stories. Dottie, you so loved and respected animals and nature! Your generosity never ceased to astound me. The precious gifts you brought to our students and the times you simply walked into the classroom with craft items, headphones for our listening center, puzzles and books to share! Dottie, you cared for others outside our classroom walls; such as your neighbors, colleagues and friends. I remember how you visited a friend in a nursing home regularly for a long while, helping to care by feeding her and bringing her what ever she needed. Dottie, I want to hear that click coming from the classroom door. For now I will say a heart felt THANK YOU and goodbye to a dear friend and human being that blessed this earth. Many thanks for visiting me in a dream I had the other day. You were smiling and walking spryly past me with energy and vigor. And that reinforces the way I will always remember you, Dorothy A. Weiss. Missy Woller Kindergarten Teacher Elsmere Elementary School

I worked in Glenmont with four blind students and Dottie had 3 of them in kindergarten. One of them said" I wanted to be a teacher like Miss Weiss. She provided a solid foundation for many kids to begin their journey in education." (That student is a guidance councelor in Texas today) Another student (very musical) remembers correcting her on a misplayed note on the piano. My daughter also had her and she enjoyed her days in her class. She will be missed.
