Obituary of Sally Ann Lavine

Sally Ann Lavine, a lifetime resident of the Albany area, passed away at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home on June 12 after a short illness at the age of 88. For the previous four years she had resided at Atria Guilderland, an assisted living community. Sally was the devoted daughter of Carl C. Lavine, President of the Albany Textile Waste Company, and Esther Weisburgh Lavine. She is survived by her sister Phyllis (Howard)) Berk and niece Celia Berk, all of New York City, and by the children of her late nephew Brian Berk. Sally graduated from Milne High School in 1941 and earned her Associate Degree in Secretarial Science from Green Mountain Junior College in 1943. She worked for the N.Y. State Selective Service System before moving on to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service in Albany, where she had a long and distinguished career until her retirement in 1984. Among her various positions, she was Secretary to the Assistant District Director and the District Stabilization Manager, as well as Executive Secretary to the Chief of the Collection & Taxpayer Service Division (CATS). Throughout her years with the IRS she earned numerous citations, commendations, and awards for superior performance. Sally was actively involved in the life of the community, doing volunteer work for the National Council of Jewish Women, serving on committees at the Jewish Community Center, and faithfully visiting residents of Daughters of Sarah. She received certificates of appreciation from groups that included B'nai B'rith Women and the Chai Society of the United Jewish Federation. She was a lifelong member of Congregation Beth Emeth and served on the Board of the Sisterhood. Graveside services will be held at the Beth Emeth Cemetery, Turner Lane in Loudonville, NY on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 11:00am The family will be receiving visitors from 6-8 pm on Tuesday June 14 at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue, Albany.
