Obituary of Sidney Kaplan

SIDNEY S. KAPLAN 1913-2011 Sidney S. Kaplan, born May 4th, 1913, passed away April 5, 2011 at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center in Albany, under the care of Community Hospice. Born in Manhattan, he was the sole surviving sibling of 16 sisters and brothers and was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Bessie Sachowitz Kaplan. He was also predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Frances Kaplan. Sidney is survived by his sons, Harvey A. Kaplan (Joan Berle), of Jacksonville, FL; Dr. Barry Kaplan (Jackie), of Fairport, NY; and Alden B. Kaplan (Janet), of Athens, NY; and a daughter, Deborah Rudnick of North Bergen, NJ. He is also survived by grandchildren, Lee Kaplan (Maria Solanet), June Sills (Charles McCauley), Bonnie Graham (Billy), Lisa Muehlmann-Theuer (Ernoe Theuer, VI), Max Kaplan, Amy Higbee (William), and Hal Rudnick; as well as great-grandchildren, Elisabeth, Friedrich and Richard Muehlmann, Ernoe Theuer VII, Rachel McCauley, and Chase Higbee. Sidney was proud to have been a New York City Firefighter, retiring after fighting many fires, saving many lives and serving in Engine 59 in Harlem and Engine 71 in the Bronx. He was a resident of the Capital District for 4 years, after spending 34 years in South Florida. He was also a Member of the Order of Masons and the FDNY's Ner Tamid Society. Interment and services will be in Boynton Beach, Fl. The family would like to thank many of the aides, employees and volunteers of Community Hospice and Daughters of Sarah for their kindness to and friendship with Sidney. The family requests that any donations or bequests in Sidney Kaplan's name be made to Congregation Ohav Shalom, 113 New Krumkill Road, Albany, NY 12208.
