Obituary of Louis Schaffer
Louis Schaffer, age 96 of Albany, NY died on Monday, March 19, 2012 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Born in Vineland, NJ, Mr. Shaffer was a resident of Albany most of his life. He was a 1933 graduate of Albany High School and was also a graduate of the Albany College of Pharmacy. He was an air force veteran and served during World War II. Mr. Schaffer along with his family owned and operated the former Schaffer's Department Store on Central Avenue in Albany, retiring at the age of 65. He was a member of Temple Israel as well as the B'nai Sholom Reform Congregation in Albany. He was also a member of Kiwanis and the Albany Jewish War Veterans Post # 105.
Mr. Schaffer is survived by his wife of 64 years. Harriet Bardack Schaffer, a son, Howard Schaffer of Albany, and 2 daughters Donna Minassian of Slingerlands, NY and Sara Schaffer of Milford, Ct. Grandfather of Michael Sperber (Megan), Sam Minassian, Chana and Jonah Schaffer. Great grandfather of Violet Merle Sperber. He also leaves his son-in-law, Lewis Sperber and several nieces and nephews. Louis was predeceased by 3 brothers, David, Max and Fred Schaffer and a sister Molly Buff as well as his daughter, Merle Sperber and his son-in-law, Dr. Harry Minassian.
Services at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue, Albany on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 11:00am. Interment will follow in the Temple Israel Cemetery, Guilderland, NY. Those wishing to remember Mr. Schaffer in a special way may make a memorial contribution to Community Hospice 445 New Karen Road Albany, NY 12205 or a charity one's choice. The period of mourning will be observed at the Schaffer residence on Thursday from 7-9pm, Friday from 3-5pm and on Sunday from 1-3pm and 7-9pm
