Obituary of Mildred Wennar

MILDRED "MIM" WENNAR 1922-2010 SCHENECTADY Mildred "Mimi" (Greenstein) Wennar died August 24, 2010 peacefully and surrounded by her family at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY after a brief illness. Mim was born on December 16, 1922 in Albany, NY to Russian immigrants Harry and Anna (Snyder) Greenstein (deceased). She was a longtime resident of Van Antwerp Village in Schenectady, and most recently of The Massry Residence in Albany, NY. She was raised in the vibrant South End of Albany where her love of food was born at her family's kosher restaurant, Greenstein's Hygenic. It was there that she met her husband and love of 59 years, Maurice "Murray" Wennar who predeceased her in 2000. She was educated in the Albany schools, graduating from Phillip Schuyler High School. After raising her family in Schenectady, Mim went to work at the Schenectady Department of Social Services in 1964 as Head Receptionist, retiring in 1985. Mim's hobbies included travel, theatre, volunteering and going out to restaurants, always saving room for dessert. She was a proud mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend whose example of kindness, generosity and fairness will live forever in the hearts of those she touched. In addition to her parents and husband, Mim was predeceased by her son, Dr. Martin H. Wennar and her sister Rose Greenstein Kantin. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Wennar Kutil of Niskayuna. Grandmother of Brooks ( Stephanie) Friedman of Malta, Rachel Kutil of Albany; Todd ( Valerie) of Milton, Vt., Ami ( Greg) Hampton of Helendale, California and their Mother, Dr. Elizabeth Wennar of Manchester, Vt. Sister of Marion Gerber of Schenectady, and great -grandchildren, Maddox and Maci Friedman; Addison and Emma Wennar. Funeral services will be held at Congregation Gates of Heaven, 852 Ashmore Avenue Schenectady, NY on Friday August 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment in the Independent Benevolent Cemetery on Fuller Road in Albany. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Congregation Gates of Heaven. The family would like to thank the staff at The Massry Residence as well as the staff of Unit 4A at Ellis Hospital for their kindness and care. Shiva will be observed on Friday following the service of interment, commencing again on Saturday evening and throughout the day on Sunday with a minyan service on Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:00p.m. at the home of her daughter at 25 Carrie Court, Niskayuna.
