Obituary of Sheldon Steuer

SHELDON STEUER Sheldon Steuer,pathfinder of Schenectady, NY died on Monday August 23, 2010 at the Ellis Hospital in Schenectady., New York. A graduate of Saratoga Springs High School,class of 1941, Mr. Steuer joined the U.S. Army,and became a member of the Pathfinder unit attached to the 29Th Troop Carrier Command.He took part in the African,Sicilian,and French Campaigns of WWII,and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Fourragere Belqique. After the war,he continued his education at RPI while working at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory,and later at the Malta Test Station of GE Aerospace,Completing the requirements for his MSC degree.Subsequently,he worked at the Space Center at Huntsville,Alabama,where he received a personal commendation from Dr.Wernher Von Braun. Mr. Steuer spent several years with GE's Aerospace Ground Support Facilities at Cocoa Beach,Florida,from which he transferred to its Gas Turbine Division,first in Greenville,South Carolina,and then at Schenectady,N.Y. He retired in 1989,rounding out 41 years with GE. After retirement,he volunteered for service with the Israeli army,completing four tours of duty performing tank maintenance and repair at the J 'ulis base. A regular member of the daily "minyan"at Congregation Beth Israel in Schenectady,Mr.Steuer functioned as an unofficial "Shammos,"opening the building and preparing for morning services. He leaves behind three children,Bram,Jocelyn,and Harlan Steuer,who reside in Albany.He also leaves a sister Miriam Messinger in Saratoga Springs,and her four children.Mrs.Ava Biffer Bloomfield Ct.,Mrs.Sharon Schultz of Dagsborg Delaware,Mrs.Elitza Meyer of Mountainside,N.J.,Michael Messinger of Saratoga Springs N.Y.,and their families.In addition,Mr.Steuer leaves cousins Dr.Maxmilian Steuer (Edda)Stockholm Sweden,Dr.Hedy Steuer Mann (Thomas) Frankfurt Germany,Egan Steuer Amsterdam Holland,Jacque Soffer ( Rene) Paris France, ALL Holocaust survivors,and their families. Funeral services will be held Wednesday August 25th at 2:30 p.m. at the Beth Israel Cemetery Chapel (upper cemetery) Abbottsford Road in Rotterdam, NY (on top of hill) off Hamburg Street which is off of Route 7. The family will be sitting Shiva for the full 7 days at 209 Caroline Street Saratoga Springs,N.Y.
