SIDNEY WALLACE
1924- 2009
COBLESKILL, NY
Sidney (Sid) Wallace, 84, of Cobleskill, died on May 7, 2009, at home with his family at his side, following a long illness.
Born in Syracuse to Meyer and Ida (Savatsky) Wallace on August 22, 1924. Mr. Wallace moved with his parents to Cobleskill at the age of 13. He graduated from Cobleskill High School in 1941 and from Syracuse University in 1950.
He was a decorated World War II veteran in the US Army 25th Field Artillery Battalion from 1942-1945, serving in the European Theatre. He was a Past President of the Cobleskill Exchange Club, where he had been a member since 1952. He was also a founding member of the prestigious Cobleskill 10:00 Coffee Club which has met 365 days a year for nearly 50 years.
After graduating college he returned to Cobleskill to join the family business M. Wallace & Sons where he worked until retiring in 1995. He continued assisting his son Arthur in the business for several years after retirement.
Mr. Wallace and his wife, Beatrice, recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in conjunction with Beatrice's 80th birthday in February 2009 at a festive celebration with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Beatrice (Rubin), his sons Leonard (Renee) of Jacksonville, FL; Robert (Roberta Spoon) of San Diego, CA; and Arthur (Kelly Ogborn) of Cobleskill; sisters-in-law Bernice Rubin of Cobleskill and Evelyn Rubin of Denver, CO and brother-in-law Abe (Molly) Rubin of Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by grandchildren, Eric Wallace and Danielle Wallace of Jacksonville, FL, Kelly Spoon and Kristin Spoon (Michael Nalu) of San Diego, CA and great-grandchildren, Ashley Prescott, Gavin and Jonas Nalu of San Diego, CA, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Lester Wallace of Albany and sister Marion Gabriel of Cobleskill and brothers-in-law Solomon Rubin of Cobleskill and Albert Rubin of Los Angeles, CA.
Services will be held at Congregation Beth Israel, 2195 Eastern Parkway, Schenectady 12309 on Sunday, May 10th at 1:00 Interment will be followed in Beth Israel Cemetery. The Wallace's celebrated their 50th anniversary of membership at Congregation Beth Israel several years ago.
