Obituary of Morton Achiron

Morton Achiron, born September 26, 1925 in New York City. passed away on April 20, 2016 at the age of 90. He was married to Shirley Audrey Achiron (nee Burger) for 44 years until her death in 1995. Devoted father of Ellen Rachel West of Springfield, Virginia. Beloved twenty-year companion to Rhoda LaVine of Latham. Cherished uncle of Mitch Achiron, Marilyn Achiron and David Shapiro and enormously proud and adoring grand uncle to Evan Achiron. Morty was a “character.” He was fiercely passionate about the people he loved and never hesitated to let them know how he felt about them. While growing up in the Bronx with his brother Bernie and cousins Alan, Billy and Eleanor, Mort was known as a fighter, and so it was no surprise when he enlisted and became a Marine a week before his high school graduation in 1944. He was on active duty as a radio operator in the Asiatic Pacific Theater in March of 1945 and participated in combat action on Iwo Jima during that fateful battle. After returning to New York in 1946 Mort met, and in 1951 married, Shirley Burger and soon thereafter relocated to Schenectady to be close to Shirley’s sister Gertrude and her family. For over 20 years, Mort worked full-time for the Watervliet Arsenal, in addition to co-owning and co-operating The (Union Street) Printery, Invitations Unlimited and Calligraphy with the Write Touch. He was a Hospice Volunteer, a member of Congregation Gates of Heaven, a member of the American Legion and the Jewish War Veterans organizations.
