Obituary of David Berlant
Dr. David A. Berlant of Schenectady and Boynton Beach, Florida died February 20, 2016. He was born in 1915, the younger son of Anna and Moses Berlant. He served in World War II as radio man on a Pacific Destroyer. He graduated from Columbia University School of Optometry with a degree in Optometry and practiced for over twenty five years in Hoosick Falls, NY. He was active in community affairs as a member of the Hoosick Falls Kiwanis Club serving as the club President and Lieutenant Governor of the van Rensselaer Division. He was involved in the move to form the Hoosick Falls Central School District and served on the sitting committee for the new school. When the Commission on Economic Development was formed in Renssaeler County, he was the Hoosick Falls representative on the Board and later appointed by the County Legislature when the Board was reformulated, eventually serving as the Chairman of the Board for a number of years. He was also active with the Mohican Council of the Boy Scouts of America in several capacities and served as a member of their Executive Board. He retired in 1975 and divided his time between New York and Florida. He was predeceased by his parents, older brother, and his wife, Rose. He is survived by his son Joseph T. Berlant of Schenectady, his nephews Anthony and Jeffrey, two grand nieces, and cousins.
Services will be held at 10 AM, Sunday, March 6 at Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue, Albany, New York. Burial will follow in Berith Sholom Cemetery, Belle Avenue, Troy, New York. The family will sit Shiva from 7:30 PM to 9 PM, Sunday March 6 through Friday, March 11 at 836 Londonderry Road, Schenectady, New York. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Rabbi’s Fund, Congregation Berith Sholom, 167 Third Street, Troy, New York 12801.
